Dating Industry Broadcast VIII

June 14, 2017

The "dating scene" has radically evolved in the last 5 years alone. Have you felt the impact of these changes on your dating life? The only certainty is that this pattern of transformation will continue. What does this mean for the modern dater and how does dating and technology intersect? Get the scoop on what's new in the dating industry with our monthly Dating Industry Broadcast.

The Dating Industry Broadcast series is inspired by The Staggering Research On Choosing Mates, in which Tawkify Co-Founder, E. Jean Carroll, collected the latest research on our trade and blasted it out to the whole team.

Enjoy this month's scoop!

THE NEW YORK TIMES, The Hottest Body Part? For a Sapiosexual, It’s the Brain, 6/2/17:

In a society obsessed with physical appearance, sexual attraction for some people is based
on intellect, and not necessarily on looks.

For Mr. Okeke-Diagne, being sapiosexual means intellectual conversation is a key part of dating and sex. While some couples might exchange racy photos or texts, he once sent a woman he was seeing a multipage erotic story he had written that included references to the Julian calendar, the decimal system and global climate change. Writing the story was such a turn-on for him that he tried to find similar erotica online — with little success...See the full article here.
BUSTLE, The Reason Meeting People In Real Life May Make Them More Attractive, 6/15/17:

Research from the University of Kansas that will be published in the Communication Studies Journal found that meeting people in real life can make a big difference. Students were asked to rank 10 photos again in terms of attractiveness — then they met one of the people from the photos in real life for a chat. After talking and getting to know each other, they were asked to rank all 10 photos again. What did they find? That the attractiveness ranking went up, but only for the person they spoke to in real life. Interestingly, people who had low-to-mid rankings to begin with tended to get a bigger bump...See the full article here.

MEN'S HEALTH, The Online Dating Mistake That's Wrecking Your Chances Of an Awesome Match, 6/15/17:

Researchers recruited a group of 152 adults, and told them they were going to pilot a new dating website. The participants were split among how many potential matches popped up on their site: Some saw just six choices, while the others were shown 24. Then, they chose their potential date.

One week later, online daters given a large pool of potential matches were less satisfied with their choice than those who chose from a small set, the study found...See the full article here.

ONLINE PERSONALS WATCH, Wingman Survey: Millennials Think They Are Excellent Matchmakers, 5/23/17:

According to Wingman's recent survey, 90% of millennials would enjoy playing matchmaker for their friends. 70% said they thought the matches they would make for their friends would be better than if they pick their own dates. Wingman is not a dating app, but rather a growing community of "matchmakers" who want to do something good for a single friend...See the full article here.

According to matchmakers, there are ways you can stay positive when single, and dating is making you all sorts of frustrated. "The pressures of dating stem from the need to uphold a dating mask," Julia Armet, Director of Operations at matchmaking service, Tawkify, tells Bustle. "We all fall into the game of dress-up, with social masks being one of the greatest blocks to establishing true intimacy." if you really want to stay empowered when you're looking for love, Armet says, stop dating and start connecting. "Human-to-human vulnerability is the natural consequence of two people allowing their inner selves to shine," she says.

So here are the best ways to stay empowered when dating is bringing you down, according to matchmakers... Read: How To Stay Positive While Dating, According To Matchmakers on Bustle.com!

"Having everything in common is too much of a good thing," Kimia Mansoor, Professional Matchmaker at Tawkify tells Bustle. "Many people think that having shared interests means you've found your soulmate. Some dating apps even use mutually liked pages as a way of connecting people. When you have everything in common with your partner, you’ll find yourself without any time apart and without anything to contribute to one another's lives. A balance of common and separate interests is ideal, as having some separateness from your partner is essential to building a long-lasting bond." It's all about balance.
